Words will carry us toward the clear water...

Words will carry us somehow toward the clear, cold, pure, untouched spring.... out of thick foliage stumbling...  arms thrashing, cursing, confused... panting for air... a conversation of sorts a kind of speech that follows upon chaos scratches, cuts and the ripping of socks... a confused running, a sprint... down the uninvited path each a dead end with paradise in view brown barks, Nature's fence... sharp and prickly, walls of green the creepers rising up at us,  harsh branches... savage vines to trip upon... a blazing sun, the mind-fogging heat... I want to say that words can save us... heralding togetherness and a plan of sorts... Diving in water,  exuberant,  the goal of hydration, rest, some much-needed healing relaxation... the time redeemed... Yet something else then and there at the moment of crisis.. yanks the mind into gear a gravity of necessity.... just some garble of unremembered toil...

The Collage Effect of Media...

. .. thinking about the " collage effect " of media, the bombardment of images and their "immersive" quality, putting us into the crucible of the moment,  grabbing us with the choicest morsels - those stories that blot out or at least overshadow those other minor goings-on of the day,  kidnapping our attention with an urgent, burning, breathless,  aesthetic of now... Look at the headlines...a massive mushroom-cloud-like explosion in Beirut, Lebanon - followed by protests and rioting, most of the city in ruins, the entire government resigning...a fraudulent stolen election in Belarus , another corrupt autocrat still in power....more protests by night...a clamp-down in Hong Kong , an "Apple daily newspaper owner" arrested and later released on bail... another police shooting in the States... stores in Chicago  looted overnight.... Portland demonstrations...clashes with police...slap-dash executive orders, a relief bill still on hold....school re-openings go...

Radicalizing the Revolution...

The uprising begins and the revolutionaries seize power...Their first step is to disband the existing police force,  dismantle the military apparatus, overthrow the suffocating media web of existing propaganda, commence a new network of social communications, declare the previous governmental structure as defunct, welcome the people at large to the new conditions of radical anarchistic post-statehood, sponsor rallies in the public square, encourage dancing, singing and loud clapping, outlaw large corporations, monopolies, conglomerates, tech giants, Amazon, Google,  Apple, etc., redistribute existing accumulations of wealth among the millions of essential workers, reconstitute the existing means of production spontaneous and perhaps haphazardly under a separate set of umbrella categories (to be owned by everyone, to be administered by everyone, on a system of rotation, each according to their needs), declare all essential industries open to all, first come, first serve, demoli...

On Basketball

It is an activity that demands speed, timing, quickness, strength, agility...one that requires running at top speed, jumping, gliding, pivoting, stopping on a dime, moving sideways and backwards, using hands, feet, legs, shoulders, core muscles, abdomen and back - allowing one to feel obscure tendons and joints - one that creates an ebb and flow of motion, generating a time-bending montage of sweat, soreness and fatigue happily obscured and subordinated to the greater task of mental focus and concentration...it is an activity that sends teams back and forth along a hardwood floor,  ninety feet at a time, shifting haphazardly between defense and offense, necessitating make-shift, ad-hoc, spur-of-the-moment, decision-making and instantaneous moves in ever-changing configurations arising out of nowhere and dissolving into other combinations of players....it is a game of rudiments and fundamentals - building-blocks and skill-sets, including but not limited to: dribbling, passing, shoot...

What Leibniz taught me....

There is a way to talk and think about God that should not make anyone feel uncomfortable....a philosophical method that encourages open discussion... There is a way to ask questions (hypothetical inquiries) about the divine attributes and the divine nature, to investigate our "ideas" of God and what we are in fact saying when we posit "God's existence" ... One can delve into such matters without feeling obliged to arrive at hastily-conceived answers to specific questions...There is affirm possibilities and probabilities without landing upon anything definite....There is a way to recognize, problems, puzzles, contradictions involving God...There is a way to admit ignorance and uncertainty about the ultimate reality without anyone turning into a dogmatic atheist....There is a way to avoid false claims and misconceptions about God...Attacking such misconceptions does not make one an atheist - but rather helps to defeat superstition and idolatry (two of the misshap...
We cannot go on chasing ghosts...shadows...metaphysical abstractions...It must start with something tangible...empirical...able-to-be-verified, yet also tied to consciousness...

Reading the Signs...

Oftentimes we search for signs....omens....clues....indicators that help us feel (to some degree) in control of our circumstances or at least give us confirmation that we are on the right path, to happiness, to success, to completion..Out of the blue, something happens, and a sign is given.... (A new job, the big move, unexpected illness or injury,  a new romance, a sudden death...a family crisis....a violent confrontation... a change of attitude...extreme stress or trauma, a lazy day sleeping in, a chance encounter with a stranger...falling off a ladder...being hit by a car...going to the opera) We do not let such major events simply "go by"  without grasping for some explanation of why...Perhaps from an early age, our religious beliefs* (assuming that any were passed down to us) serve as guideposts....prompts....catalysts for this tendency....not  the tenets of faith alone, not the bare rituals etc., but the feelings that underlie, the deep-seated notions (ethical/philo...

An End to Hypocrisy...

Once upon a time, way back when, there were those who paid lip-service to the higher ideals, but could never live up to them...They spoke of generosity and self-restraint, while privately obsessing over money and searching for the next secret thrill...They praised others for their "clean living" but privately ridiculed these "simpletons," "bores" and  "straight-arrows"... They spoke of love and friendship, but privately they gossiped and picked apart the flaws of their neighbors and co-workers...coveting and comparing notes, ah yes, holding grudges against their so-called friends. They kept their minor "bad habits" in check and in plain sight, but kept others well-hidden under the rug or in the closet...Filled with restless curiosity and wanderlust, they looked for places, for locales where the normal rules did not apply... Rhetorically, they lauded and affirmed the self-enforcement of chaste and civil comportment between the sexes, but...

The Elixir

What happens when the promised elixir (*) that has been touted for centuries as guaranteed to promote health, heal the wounds, cure disease, alleviate pain and prevent the noxious viruses from returning does not deliver on the hoped-for happy outcome? What is left for us to conclude when we observe the sick and infirm, the injured, the newly infected, bedridden souls, walking wounded,     still vulnerable to the onslaught of malignant microbes? Has the original situation fundamentally changed? Do we delude ourselves by claiming progress? Are we to say, behold the amazing power of the elixir that only here and there, haphazardly and unpredictably works its magic ? Because many have closed themselves off from the healing effects and thereby prove unworthy of a cure? Is that it? On the basis of such glaring evidence,  could one not reasonably begin to question the purpose of the elixir itself? And if the elixir has not been working out as advertised, have we in fact misunde...

The Mechanisms of Repression...

The mechanisms of repression continue their grind, like the inner workings of a clock....In an age of openness and complete transparency, no less...What is being repressed and why? Even now, at a time when trolls spew venom from their basement laptops...what is there that still must be kept buried? Thoughts that are considered vagaries,   forbidden, alien, unlawful, creepy, outrageous, unlucky. .. thoughts that do not represent " who we are "... Career-ending thoughts....hostile, angry, reckless thoughts.... ugly, twisted, bestial thoughts, ... Thoughts that disparage and drag down others, thoughts that shame and lay blame to.... hostility toward the brighter lights, covetous thoughts meant to demean....Thoughts that circle around an unseemly topic...obsessing over car crashes, prison conditions, serial crime, ....an unhealthy fixation on wild-fires and boating accidents,  poison and torture, hoarders in houses and the morbidly obese, missing persons,  runaways, vaga...

Conflicted spells Ambivalence...

I maintain that Freud was right about us in one respect - that whatever our professed opinions might be on the surface - there is always a hidden current of thought and feeling that flows in a different direction... full of messy, inappropriate, hostile, aggressive, irascible impulses - directed outward at various outside sources of irritation and aversion. These repressed "sentiments" (I hate x, y, z...) have a way of inserting themselves into our daily train of thought,  trickling into our speech patterns, making for unexpected gaffes, over-reactions, out-of-kilter behaviors, white-lies,  double-standards... making us feel for lack of a better word, conflicted - at least on the inside, ambivalent , more susceptible to insensitivity than our otherwise liberal-progressive consciences would care to admit.....to acknowledge to this sub-current of aggression hiding in the shadows doesn't mean that our conscious opinions (of peace, love, cooperation, tolerance, urbanity, ...

The Role of Moods

When the mood comes upon you, it takes you there to that place and you see whatever you see through that lens... Think of the scene that emerges sleepily or sanguinely, with irritation, laughter, sadness, surprise or from anger...always some agenda lurking in the background...People, places, things, creatures either doing what we need them to do or not - getting in our way, making us react.. I often imagine a way of simply "being there" without any particular mood attached- sitting there,  part of the scene,  watching paint dry, watching the corn grow as it were, people-watching, not even staring, taking in all the commotion, the daily activity without hint of passing judgment...a neutral observer ....Would I lose all interest at that moment...or would another form of curiosity kick in?

Opening the Floodgates...

What year did everything change...? When did the floodgates open? What were the changes exactly? Changes in attitude, changes in culture...,forbidden topics no longer forbidden, a shift in manners and morals... Was it because of JFK's death and the aftermath of that or before? A reaction to the cold war, the atom bomb, the H-bomb? the anxiety that was the 1950s? People gradually speaking more openly, candidly, cursing in public, reading Freud, Kinsey, Kerouac, wearing their hair longer (men) or shorter (women)? Indulging, unwinding, breaking loose from convention, rebelling against parents (the older crowd),  shedding inhibitions, breaking molds, getting rid of  hang-ups, a post-war middle-class sampling bohemian trends seeping downward from the upper classes or upward from the working classes...Was it a seed planted by the dream factory of Hollywood, a subliminal advertising ploy, the power of suggestion, collective hypnosis, mass media? Was it from articles in Cosmopolitan a...
And speaking of simple dichotomies and non-intersecting Venn diagrams...doesn't it seem that the world is divided up into two kinds of folk: those who require order and security in their lives vs. those who crave chaos and danger...the introverted first grouping under which I include myself requires more than a little "peace and quiet" along with a well-established routine whereas those in the second category cannot sit still in their own room for more than five minutes....
